Black cumin seed and its oil (also called Nigella sativa) is a natural food supplement that has been used for centuries by various civilizations around the world. It is used as a spice and flavoring in various food preparations, and as a traditional medicine for various ailments in animals and humans.

Because of its contribution to life, black cumin has a very rich history and has even been called “the seed of blessing.” Black cumin seed was found in the tomb of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun, as one of many accompanying articles. Hippocrates and Dioscorides called it “Melanthion,” while the Bible describes it as the “healing black cumin” (Isaiah 28:25, 27). Based on its full history and recent scientific findings, some claim that it is one of the most powerful medicinal plants known to man.

Black cumin oil typically contains 1.06 to 4.07 mg/g thymoquinone and 32 to 40% fatty acids, such as linoleic acid (polyunsaturated omega 6 fatty acid). In addition, black cumin oil usually contains phytosterols. The total sterol content of black cumin seed oil appears to be between 18 and 42%, while the main sterols identified were β-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol and 5-avenasterol.

All of the above components (thymoquinone, linoleic acid, phytosterols) are known to be excellent compounds with significant potential for applications to support human health. Thymoquinone is our preferred component and, in our opinion, makes this dietary supplement special.
