Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) was first isolated in 1951 by Lester Reed, a biochemist at the University of Texas. Reed studied the enzymes involved in the metabolism of pyruvate, a molecule that plays a crucial role in energy production at the cellular level, in the mitochondria. He found that ALA was a cofactor for these enzymes involved in the Krebs cycle, meaning it is necessary for their proper functioning.
ALA is considered a “vitamin-like” substance because of its essential role in the body, even though it is not technically a vitamin. It can be obtained from food sources such as meat, spinach and potatoes, or as a supplement.
Since its discovery, ALA has been the subject of extensive research and is now known to have a wide range of biological activities. Over time, it was discovered that alpha-lipoic acid comes in two different forms: R-lipoic acid and S-lipoic acid. R-lipoic acid is the naturally occurring and biologically active isomer in the human body.
The sodium salt of R-lipoic acid represents an evolution in its administration. While standard alpha-lipoic acid supplements contain both the R and S isomers, it was discovered that the R form is superior in terms of bioavailability and efficacy. However, pure R-lipoic acid, while more potent, is less stable and more difficult for the body to absorb when used in supplements. This led to the development of the sodium salt of R-lipoic acid – a stabilized version of the natural R isomer, which significantly improves stability, absorption and bioavailability.
