AHCC® (Active Hexose Correlated Compound) is a dietary supplement derived from the mycelium of shiitake mushrooms. It is produced through a specialized culture and enzymatic modification process, resulting in a unique, standardized extract. AHCC® is known for its polysaccharides, particularly alpha-glucans, which are not commonly found in other mushroom-based products. AHCC® was discovered by Japanese scientists after screening hundreds of mushroom species in search of those with potential health benefits. Following this study, scientists identified alpha-glucans – polysaccharides that occur naturally in small amounts in the mycelium of shiitake – as one of the most prominent compounds. (This is in contrast to the fruiting body of the mushroom, which contains mostly beta-glucans.)
To improve the absorption and effectiveness of the alpha-glucans, Japanese scientists have developed a special patented production process with a fermentation step. During this process, the mycelia are grown in a liquid culture medium based on rice bran. During the fermentation process, the mycelia convert components of the medium into other nutrients. This process is lengthy and takes about two months, but the final AHCC® (including partially acetylated alpha-glucans) possesses unique properties that have made AHCC® a widely used dietary supplement.
Indeed, AHCC® has been studied several times, both in laboratories and in clinical practice, with its potential often highlighted in relation to various health problems. Today, its potential is supported by more than 30 scientific studies, including human clinical trials.
